This is the website of Tomohito Baji, Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the University of Tokyo. My main research interests lie in the history of political thought and international thought in Britain and Japan since the nineteenth century. With a particular focus on empire and international order, my work explores the intersection of intellectual history and International Relations.

My current research focuses on three themes: rethinking political thought on settler colonialism and colonial policy studies in modern Japan from a perspective of global intellectual history; examining visions of human settlement (or colonization) in outer space, e.g. on Mars, through the historical lens of settler colonialism; and exploring the political thought of decolonization in the Pacific islands region since the latter half of the twentieth century.
